Hello! My name is Madeline Hanton and I go by Madi. I grew up in southern Washington state across the river from Portland, Oregon. I graduated from Oregon State University. I have a double degree in Child Development and Family Sciences and in Education. I grew up playing lots of sports and being in different clubs. I really like working with others and being involved in my community. I have experience with travel as I have done mission work in Guatemala, and did a study abroad called Semester at Sea where I studied on a boat and traveled to different countries in the Mediterranean Sea and in Northern Europe. I love to go to new places and meet new people!
One of my educational philosophies is communication. I think communication is very important because it helps everything run smoothly in the classroom. Communication can be used in many different ways in the classroom for example during group work. Having communication as a skill is very important when working with others because it is how you work through the assignment or the task at hand. Communication in group work also includes listening to others and being able to collaborate. Students who struggle with communication, I have found, struggle as well with working with others and making friends. Communication is the foundation of life as we need to be able to communicate to learn, work with others, accomplish things, grow, and many other things as well. Communication in the classroom also looks like asking and answering questions. We spend a good amount of time in my classroom having discussion with discourse about the things we are learning about. Communication is how I see what my students have learned and what they need more support with. It is how they learn social skills and working with others, and it is also how I communicate with them. As a teacher I need to be able to communicate with my students in order to teach them. I also need to be able to communicate with peers, staff, facility, parents, etc. Communication is the backbone of relationships and working with others and is the educational philosophy I try to implement everyday in my classroom. I love teaching Language Arts/Reading as I struggled with reading as a student and get excited when I can help students become stronger and more confident readers. I also love to teach kindness and inclusivity; I want all my students to feel as an equally important factor in the classroom!
One of my biggest and favorite hobbies is travel. I love to explore and visit new places. One of the things I am most excited about living in Taiwan is traveling around the country and meeting new people. I love to make connections, share stories, and learn from others. I am interested in learning to cook authentic food while I am there, hiking/bike riding, visiting the coast, exploring temples and art museums, and to meet everyone at Cornel! I am a very positive person and like to try and keep my glass half full instead of half empty. I do very well with constructive criticisms and can learn well and collaborate with others. I do well with positive and supportive environments! I love coffee, tea, pizza, ramen, movies, music, games, and adventures! I am a very open person and am a friend when anyone needs one! If anyone ever needs anything or has questions please reach out. I love to help and support my peers and have a welcoming and kind personality. I am so excited for the next school year and can’t wait to work with you!
Love,
T.Madi
